What is asbestos?
As defined by the National Cancer Institute, asbestos is a group of minerals, which can naturally be found in rocks and soil, that take the form of tiny fibers. Loose asbestos fibers breathed into the lungs can cause several serious and life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. Since individual asbestos fibers cannot be seen by the naked eye, they are inhaled unknowingly and can become trapped in the lungs. When swallowed, the fibers can become embedded into the digestive tract as well.
Due to its heat- and fire-resistant qualities, asbestos has been utilized in many consumer products, automobile parts (clutches, brakes, transmission parts), gaskets, coatings, packaging, and various building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, asbestos cement products, etc.) during the 20th century (EPA).
Asbestos-containing products
From the early 1900s, asbestos became prevalent in thousands of products in the United States. Its use ranged from specialized industrial products, such as refractory materials, to everyday products, such as automotive brakes. Millions of Americans were exposed to the deadly carcinogen with mitigating measures not beginning until the late twentieth century. Common products known to have contained asbestos include:
- Insulation
- Gaskets
- Packing
- Pumps
- Valves
- Boilers
- Turbines
- Cooling towers
- Furnaces
- Refractory
- Pipes
- Automotive brakes and clutches
- Joint Compounds
- Plaster
- Floor tiles
- Roofing shingles
- And many more
As stated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.
Why should I file an asbestos-related claim?
Filing a claim can help you recover compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages caused by asbestos exposure. This compensation can ease the financial burden on you and your family during the difficult time you are going through. Additionally, holding negligent companies accountable helps prevent future asbestos-related harm to others.
Everyone’s “why” for pursuing a claim is different. For some, it’s about securing their family’s financial future.
